Week 2 - Newsletter January 8
Saturday, January 8, 2022 by Cindy

Week 2 of extended learning comes from:
The Amazing Nancy Lohr. I don't even know the number of years Nancy served with Journey Forth and the Bob Jones University Press Cirrculcum (I'm sure I got the name officially incorrect - but you get the gest!) I am always taken in when I listen to Nancy teach and you will be too. She is just such a wealth of information. And though she retired end of last year from BJU, it doesn't stop her knowledge. She's taking you on a little journey with titles and sentences. Again, a lesson from the past, but I tell ya...we just can't pass them up. This will go live on the blog at 4 p.m. today, Jan 8. Be sure and take some additional time to study with Nancy. Click her name or here on BLOG.

Shirts are available until February 5.
After the 5th, you'll have to contact Taryn yourself. But YOU REALLY NEED ONE OF THESE. Last week I gave you a list of reasons why. And just to remind you, they are as follows: 1) It's a great way to introduce yourself, let folks know what you do for a living, and strike up a conversation that may lead to book sales and speaking engagements.
2) You'll look really COOL, cuz Taryn only makes COOL STUFF.
3) You'll put a star in your heavenly crown for being a benefactor to our mission.
4) Your purchase will help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation create new and updated medications that Bob's grands and my cousin now take which improves their quality of life. And when that happens, there are happy tears everywhere.
I KNOW YOU WANT ONE OF THESE!!! I KNOW YOU DO!! Our own Taryn Souders has graciously INVENTED these. They are available on the front page of the website. The shirt is listed in the right sidebar. Just scroll down till you see it. The shirts are $14 small to large. $16 for XXL and up. But here is the really great thing. $2 of every sale goes directly into our Bob Box for the Cystic Fibrosis mission of this ministry. Besides having a fun shirt that folks will definitely comment on, you're helping our mission for the weekend. What are your benefits from purchasing a WARNING: I AM A WRITER shirt?
So go to the website, scroll down that sidebar and purchase your shirt. Then send me an email to let me know (as a back up to pay pal) and I can get your info to Taryn. Your shirt will be waiting for you when you arrive at the conference in our conference bookstore. Just tell Bennie, Kevin, or Wendy you're there to pick it up.

Just so you know...
Mentoring and paid critiques are still available. I have a lot of faculty willing to do mentoring this year so if I have missed adding one to the list on the site, just send Terri a note and ASK! FOLKS, you're looking a the picture of imperfection here. I miss stuff ALL THE TIME! So, if you don't see a name of a faculty member listed, ASK. We'll see if we can threaten them with bodily harm to mentor you. LOL!  Contact Terri Kelly at [email protected]. She will set up your mentoring or be the grim reaper because we all know, I'm all sugar and candy! (snicker).

A FINAL REMINDER!
REGISTRATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED BY MONDAY - So it is vital, if you have not completed payment for your conference registration - that you do that TODAY! WHY? Because if I do not have it secured by Monday, you lose your spot in the housing and you lose the money you have paid. I have sent emails and invoices again today. PLEASE, PLEASE, contact me if you have an issue. Let me see if we can help. Don't mess around and lose your money. I have no control over that after Monday. The bills must be paid. That's the nasty fact of being a conference director. Sometimes we just have to be plain and honest. So hop to it gang. We want to see you there. Please send me an email at [email protected] if you have an issue.

NAMES, NAMES, NAMES - Every year this happens and it's just how folks register. It is not uncommon for a conferee to use a business email, joint Pay Pal account or even be registered as a gift. I NEED YOUR NAME. Pay Pal only shows me the email address that payment comes from and for some reason, the registration forms are not coming through from Pay Pal. SO, if you are one of those people, who registered under a different name or have a wife or hubby and they use a different name, I need to know. Here's why! SECURITY AT THE COVE! If we do not have your name correct you cannot come on campus at the Cove. They run a wonderfully tight security for all the conferees at the Cove and if you are NOT ON THE LIST, you do not drive up the hill. Does that make sense? So if you are unsure and you registered under a different acct other than one with your name, please let me know so I am sure we have you on the security list. Also, if you want to eat those wonderful meals at the Cove...gotta have your name.

The Devotion Contest goes into February 5. Ignore the website if it still says January (I think I changed it). We want these devotions to continue to come in as entries. I want you to try to step out. YOU CAN DO THIS! So we've extended this until Feb 5. If you have entered the devotion contest, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION:  I NEED YOU TO RESEND YOUR DEVOTIONS TO ME. WHY? Well, somehow, some of you have latched onto my personal email rather than the cindybootcamp email and you are finding that I not only have 1 email but 7. I need you to resend your entries to [email protected]. Attach your document to your email and send with DEVOTION ENTRY listed in the memo box. I would love to tell you I can find everything, but when you juggle what I juggle without an assistant, you can see why you are dealing with the picture of imperfection. I'm good, but I ain't perfect. Please resend these asap so I can get them to our judges. DO NOT SEND TO MY PERSONAL EMAIL.

Let's Talk Covid - I've grown to hate that word...Covid. But, it is a fact and since I am already getting questions let me try and give you the lowdown on the uptick of Covid. Currently, we are operating this conference mask free. Now, in the last two weeks Covid has ramped up with a new variant and so you need to understand where we stand. Regardless of how you feel about masks or vaccinations, is not the issue. IF North Carolina or the Cove changes their current policy of no mask mandate, we are required to be obedient. This means a mask may be required. IT IS NOT AT THIS TIME, but like any other facility, with the uptick in new cases, you need to know that is a possibility. So please, do not fire your rights at me or the disabilities act. I know all of that. I will simply say this, IF the no mask mandate were to change, our ministry abides by that ruling. If you do not think you can, then let me know and we'll work something out. I believe things will be fine and I am trusting in God's hand of protection over us. I would remind you, if you are nervous, wear your mask or shield. No one will fault you for that. It's completely understandable. Avoid being a hugger. I know...it's awful because writers tend to be huggers. We will offer stickers for your badges that will denote your comfort level. RED - is Please respect my wishes NOT TO HUG. YELLOW - I'm not comfortable hugging but I'm happy to shake hands. And GREEN - I'll take my changes and let you love on me. When you check in, our gals at the desk will have these stickers and will be sure you have what you are comfortable doing.

I fully understand the controversy both directions and I respect your thoughts. But bottom line is, as a ministry we agree to be obedient to the rules given us by the State of NC and by the Cove. I hope you will be willing to do the same. It's only 48 hours.

Now, having said that, there are two taboo subjects at this conference:  1) COVID DEBATE  2) POLITICAL DEBATE We are here to learn not debate. Do that on your own time. A lot of work has gone into this conference and our desire is to have everyone enjoy it. We want you to walk away having learned soooo much. So we ask that you help us with these two things. As we say in the mountains...PURTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP!

CHECK IN - No need to worry about check-in. We will have a full page on the website devoted to DAY OF ARRIVAL. All of our reservations are being added and we do not know which hotel we will be in. Generally it's Shepherd's Inn. But that could change. So there is no need in bombarding you with information until we have everything nailed down. Just know, you have a room on campus if that is what you registered for.

Early bird classes begin at 1 on Friday. We ask that you drive up to the hotel we are assigned, go in and get your badge. Leave your bags in the car. Park, catch the bus up to the training center. And attend the early bird classes. Check is not until 3 or 4 depending on how quickly the Cove can turn over the rooms, but you need your badge to get into the Training Center for classes. We will update you on all the fine details when we know them. Remember, things are constantly changing for us and the Cove who is running other conferences alongside us. So be flexible. I promise you will find the Cove employees the height of professional. One other tidbit...The Cove employees are not valets. Please do not ask them to park your car. They would sweetly do it, but don't ask. We are currently slated for the main auditorium, but we could easily be moved to our normal 3rd floor home. We won't know until we arrive. So be patient. You'll have all the details before you step foot on campus.
____________________________________

BOOKSTORE - We will offer a bookstore for your shopping. It will have books by our faculty. Unfortunately, we can only house faculty books. We simply do not have the space to house conferee books. BUT, that doesn't mean you can't carry your book with you and share it with your peers. If they wish to purchase one, you can work the details out with them.  We hope you will visit our bookstore. Your purchases will help our faculty and also help build our scholarship fund.

REMINDER: THE BOB BOX - If you know our conference, then you know we never do a conference without doing mission work as well. We are, after all, a ministry.  Each year we opt to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Our own Bob Hostetler, has two grands who have Cystic Fibrosis, I have a family member with this, and a number of ministry friends also either suffer with CF or have children who do. It is only fitting that we support this as a ministry. Each year, we set a box in our bookstore, lovingly labeled the BOB BOX, and we hope you feel moved to donate. Whatever is in the box at the end of the conference, the ministry matches the amount and we then hand it over to Bob Hostetler, whose son works for a company that doubles every donation. So by all due rights, it's multiplied three times. Which is awesome. Please consider donating to the Bob Box and let's do as we are commanded...to care for others. We will also provide a link via Pay Pay that you can also donate on line. DONATE TO THE BOB BOX.

For God -
"For God so loved the world..." John 3:16 (NIV)

I'm working on fulfilling a contract for a devotional. It's not your basic devotional, but it includes tidbits of history, reasons about the whys and hows, possible new perspectives the reader may not have thought about. I've looked for different types of scripture. Some obscure, because it forces me to study, others simple and I've found questions I never imagined. Perspectives, I've not thought of. Because this is digging a tiny bit deeper, I have secured the Biblical oversight of a Professor of Ministry and Preaching at a Bible College. I wanted to be sure, I did not misrepresent God's word in anyway. This man has been so kind to follow devotion by devotion, add insights, approve the doctrinal thoughts, and head scratch with me. I have also enlisted the wise counsel of our minister at church who has a couple of times, said, "Cindy, no one has ever asked me that question before. It's a good thought. I like where you are going."

I tell you this, not to brag or make myself look really smart, but I tell you because this type of attention is what every writer should do before they put the first word on the page. It may not be that you need Biblical direction, or doctrinal approval, but it may mean that before your words ever leave your computer, you have made sure you 1) wrote it contextually correct 2) it's written in love and not vengeance or anger, and 3) you have prayed fully over it.

When your words land on the page, you are a taking on a position most dear to God. You are carrying HIS message to the world. A world He so loved that He gave His only son for it. It's precious to Him. He's protective of it. Caring of it. Loving of it. Your words are being read by the masses, via social media, blogs, and webpages. So, what is your level of propriety for being sure the words you send out to the world are God-pleasing?

We are commissioned to go into the world and make disciples. Teach. Spread the word of this loving God and all that He was, is, and shall be. Take it seriously whether you are writing a devotion, a study, or fiction. Eddie once said in a class he taught, "Before you write something, ask yourself would God say this? Would He approve?" And what wise words those are.

My efforts to seek counsel on the devotional I am writing is not for me. I already know, I'm not the wisest person in the world. But I do this in an effort to be sure that as my words go out into the world, they represent a God of love, discipline, peace, and hope. When I write, I begin each writing day with, "Oh Lord, Hear my prayers. For You."

That is not to make me look puffed up but rather to teach you that every line you write, you are responsible to the God of all heaven and earth.

My prayer for you, as you write each day, is, "For God..." For He loved the world so much He gave His only son. This is the least we can do FOR GOD.

Much love,
Cindy
